This really hit me and I pass it on to
you..............
A simply dressed lady in a faded gingham
dress and her husband, who was
dressed in a tattered old suit, entered
the secretary's office of the
President or Harvard University. The
secretary looked with disdain at
the older couple and told them that the
President was busy.
The couple insisted to see the President.
They were continually put off
until the secretary gave in and told the
President that this couple was
there to see them and if he would give
them a few moments, they might
leave.
The President peeked out of the door, saw
the shabbily dressed couple
but told them to come in for a few minutes.
The President was "stern faced"
and it was obvious he was "too busy" and
too "important" to spend any
time with this shabbily dressed couple.
The lady spoke first. "We had a son
who attended this university but he
was killed in an accident and we'd like to
erect a memorial his honor.
The President looked at the couple in
disbelief. "Well", he said, "we
cannot erect a statue"........
"No", the bereaved mother said, "We'd
like to erect a building in his
name". The President replied "That would
cost at least half a
million"......The wife look at her husband, "Is
that all it would cost?"
The President looked at the couple and
smiled within himself. "They
couldn't buy a ticket out of town on the
nearest bus".....he mused.
For a
moment, the lady was silent. The President of the great
University thought he finally would get
rid of this couple who would
bring embarrassment on his university.
Eventually the couple got up and walked
out of the plush office. Mr. and
Mrs. Leland Stanford traveled to Palo
Alto, CA, where they established
the University that bears their name, a
memorial to a son that Harvard
no longer cared about.
In our travels and among the influence of
churches we have visited, we
find a similar situation where people are
judged by the clothes they
wear, the shade (or lack there-of) of skin
color, language or ethnic
identity or lack of influence and money.
It's easy to judge the
character of others by how they treat
those who can do nothing for them
or to them.
